Why You Should Be Taking Advantage of SEO and 5 Easy Ways to See Results Now

What is SEO and why does it matter?

SEO is search engine optimization.  In other words, if your website is configured so that it appeals to search engines (primarily Google), it has good SEO.  If your website appeals to the Google gods, then you’re more likely to appear closer to page one in the search results, and therefore be found by potential clients.  Whether you’re providing information through a blog, selling a product, or trying to attract clients that will make an appointment with you, you need great SEO to achieve your end goal.

What can you do to improve your ranking in search results with SEO?

SEO is an ever-changing animal, but there are some basic strategies you can implement in order to see an improved ranking for your website.

  1. Change the names of your images.  So many people use the default name for images, such as IMG20384.jpg, but don’t realize that updating this is an easy way to boost SEO.  Simply change the name to something applicable that relates to your site, including keywords if they make sense, like therapyappointmentplanner.jpg.  As Google scans your site, it will see these additional keywords and improve your ranking.

  2. Speaking of images, make sure the file size is not too big.  In general, keeping your images under 500kb will keep from slowing down your site too much.  If your site is slow, Google will recognize this as a reason wouldn’t want to visit it, and therefore you will not be promoted.

  3. Create original, quality content regularly.  Be it videos, podcasts, or blogs, if Google perceives that your site is a source of valuable information for potential visitors, you will be promoted in search results.  The key here is to produce content on a regular basis; see this post for more info on the topic. A word of warning: do not try to cut corners here and use a content generating service.  This can actually hurt your SEO, as Google views this a plagiarism since the same content is being used across multiple websites.

  4. Link to other pages within your site.  An easy way to keep users around on your website is to direct them to different pages.  Try to avoid sending people off of your website by linking to outside articles if possible.  Instead, direct them to other blog posts you’ve written, or your about page, or your services page.  The longer someone stays on your website, the more likely Google is to consider your website worth promoting, since it must have good information for someone to stick around.

  5. Ensure your site is mobile-friendly.  There are a number of factors that contribute to this, but you mainly want to ensure that your site is still presented in an eye-pleasing and easy-to-read format.  In addition, you want to be sure that any pop-ups or opt-in pages do not overpower your pages. Again, since more than 50% of users are using smartphones and tablets to access the internet, Google is promoting the sites that are most user-friendly for those users.
