Admit it: You Need a New Website

It’s possible you need a new website.

Sure, you can live in denial, and think, “well at least I have a website, that’s better than nothing.” Wrong. This is definitely not a case where you want to cut corners.

It’s 2018 - your web presence counts for everything.

As a mom and business owner, I live on the internet.  Seriously, I can’t imagine how I would find anything if it wasn’t online.  My son’s birthday is next month - totally searching for a bakery online. We’re going on a trip to New Orleans soon - found our vacation rental online.  Looking for information on how to best market a small business - searched online for helpful websites.

Does this sound familiar to you?  I’m sure your days are pretty similar.  So, when you know that everyone looks online first to find what they want, why would you leave your website looking so underwhelming?

Walk-ins are a thing of the past.

People no longer drive down the street and decide to just “pop in” to an interesting shop based on their sign out front.  Nowadays, we know what we want and do research ahead of time, if not complete our entire transaction online. Nobody has time to wander all over town aimlessly searching for what they want.

Having a great website is your chance to grab potential customers and turn them into buyers.  This is your first impression, so you better make it a good one.

Here are some things to consider that might convince you into updating your site sooner than later:

Is your current website optimized for mobile?

If not, it’s time to make some adjustments, or get a new one.  If your site is exactly the same on mobile as it is on a desktop, join us here in the 21st century.  Having teeny tiny print on your website that requires users to zoom in to read is frustrating. This means you’ve also got visitors that will not stick around to see what you have to offer.  If that’s not enough, Google doesn’t like it either. Read more about mobile-optimization and SEO here.

Do you have a means of customers booking services with you?

If someone comes across your site after hours and the only way to contact you is by phone, they may move on to book those services with someone else.  Squarespace offers Acuity scheduling for free with a business plan. That means whether customers want to reserve your party hall for a certain date, you have a client in need of a new hair style, or you have an amateur golfer needing to book lessons with you, you’re covered.  Acuity has the flexibility to work for any type of business, and you give potential customers a means of locking in your services any time of day. It’s a win-win.

Do you have a social media following?

That’s a good place to start, but not where your online presence should end.  Social media posts give clients just a taste of what you have to offer. Ideally, your social media posts should direct clients to your website.  That website should give them loads of valuable information building upon those posts and convert those followers to clients and customers. Having Facebook alone isn’t enough, which is why I’ve written a whole post about it.

Is your site cluttered, busy, and full of text?

There’s a company out there known for printing really cheap business cards, and they also offer a website builder.  You know who it is, and if you have a site built through them, please, please, please upgrade. Those websites are as basic as it gets, and it screams “cheap”.  The home page is usually full of itty bitty text, and doesn’t even scroll. In this day and age, if you have a static page, your website is definitely dated. Your pages should be full of beautiful images and helpful text that directs your potential clients to move forward and work with you.  No one wants to read the novel on your homepage - they’ll just find someone else.

Do you have a beginner, DIY site, but your business has become more successful?

Not everyone has the means to invest in a professional website from the get-go.  There are some decent ways to build a website yourself, but odds are, you didn’t really know what you were doing at the time.  Maybe you overlooked ways to boost your SEO, or you wanted certain features but didn't know how to implement them. If your business has grown and you’re seeing more revenues, then now is the time to make the investment in a great website and see your business really take off.

Did you start out on Wordpress, but have gotten so frustrated with constant updates and bugs that you’ve given up maintaining the site?

I can’t be the only one here.  Wordpress frustrates me to no end, with all of the updates, widgets, and plugins.  If one’s not compatible with the other, you end up with some fun surprises on your website, and more than likely, a nice bill to pay to a developer who will need to fix it for you.

There are none of those headaches with Squarespace.  It’s an all-in-one solution for everything you need to run a website.  Your hosting, security, and design are all in one place, and there’s no need for extra add-ons because it has everything you need (read more about why I love it here). Now’s the time to make the switch.

You may have been in denial before, but hopefully now you’re ready to admit it’s time for a new website.
