Every Small Business Needs a Great Website - Here's Why

Let’s face it - in 2018, you need a website, or your business doesn’t exist.

Think about it… You are looking for a restaurant nearby - do you get in your car and drive around, or do you look it up online?  And when you do your search for restaurants, you’re making a lot of judgements based on what you find. You’re looking for reviews from people who’ve already eaten there and looking at the pictures they posted to see what the food looks like.

You may even take a peek at the restaurant's website, and whether you do so consciously or not, you form opinions on the restaurant based on that, too. Do they only have a Facebook page? They must be cheap and not willing to pay for a website.  Maybe their business is struggling an they just can't afford one.  Is their site super outdated and cluttered? What must their restaurant be like? Outdated and cluttered, too?

Now, let’s change the context to a search for a small business like yours.

Let’s say your a bakery that focuses on cupcakes. Anyone looking for cupcakes is going to do a search online similar to this: “cupcakes near me” or “cupcakes in (my city)”.

They’re going to click around on different search results, and makes several assumptions based on the websites they find. Maybe they’ll end up on Facebook and get distracted, forgetting their search for cupcakes and looking at pictures of their friend’s new baby instead.

The truth is, there are a lot of small businesses in your area, and you need to stand out.

Maybe this person doing the online search needs to find a bakery that makes a certain flavor of cupcake, and this happens to be your specialty.  But what if they need help with chocolate or vanilla cupcakes? These are items available in most bakeries.  So how will they make their decision on which one to contact?

The person with the nicest website wins, 9 times out of 10.

Sure, it’s a shallow way to make a decision, but all other factors being equal (price, services, availability, etc), how else are we to expect someone to make a decision?

Consider your website to be a virtual representation of your business.

You’re not going to work out of a dark alley - you want your business to be a clean, inviting environment where your customers feel comfortable.  The same goes for your website. You don’t want to half-heartedly put your business online.

You want your customers to see your website and know that they will be in good hands with your small business.

So here’s what a stand-out website can do for you and your business:

  • When you have a customized site built just for you (ideally by me!), the site reflects your personality, and your business’s identity.  You are presenting the professional image to the world that you are successful.

  • Customers testimonials on your site give potential customers confidence that you can help them, too.

  • Pictures of you and your business give your customers an idea of what to expect when they come to see you for the first time.

  • With good SEO (search engine optimization), your website will be on the first page of search results, and you’ll be more likely to be found by potential customers.

  • You can update current offerings easily, such as your flavors of the week, classes of the month, special events, and more.
